Heritage buildings aren’t just bricks and mortar, they are the bones of our community.
As stewards of those structures, it’s through our work that we remember those who worked on them long before us, and strive to protect them for those to enjoy, long after we are gone.
ABOUT CHC
Chalmers Heritage Conservation Ltd. (CHC) was founded in Calgary, Alberta by Dave Chalmers in 2015. Working out of his garage, he had a simple mission: To provide the highest quality of craftsmanship, while respecting the heritage and original character of the buildings he and his team worked on.
CHC specializes in restoration, preservation and rehabilitation projects that ensure our heritage structures live on in ways that enable them to be used, lived in and enjoyed for decades to come.
Flash forward to today, CHC has evolved from its humble beginnings to being one of the top ranked heritage contractors in Canada.
But our initial mission hasn’t changed.
We remain committed to the future of heritage.

The CHC Team
Dave Chalmers
Owner
Dave has worked in the construction industry for over 18 years. Starting in finish carpentry, Dave moved into cribbing, framing and full residential construction management. The desire to learn new aspects of building was driven by wanting to manage projects from start to finish, while being as hands on as possible. In 2012 David teamed up with Historic Preservation Services (HPS) to learn new aspects of construction, specifically focused on commercial heritage conservation and restoration.
Dave is actively involved in providing assessment and feasibility expertise to consultants and clients, lobbying for First Nations Consultation in Heritage buildings and sites, is the current President of The Calgary Civic Trust, and is a member of various grassroots heritage initiatives.
Dave presents on various topics related to heritage conservation and restoration, as well regularly hosts hands on workshops to enable heritage building owners to conduct their own basic maintenance on their properties.

A craftsman’s quest to preserve Calgary’s heritage
Dave Chalmers points out a piece of timber lattice work taken from an old building in Calgary and draws attention to the nails attached to it.
They’re square, he says, smiling. That means they are handmade – and confirms that this piece of decorative woodwork dates back to about 1885, before the railway came to Calgary, bringing with it a ready supply of mass-produced round nails, the kind with which we are familiar today.

Restoring buildings to their past glory
There’s something comforting about the smell and feel of old wood, but to Dave Chalmers, it’s much more. The owner of Chalmers Heritage Conservation treats it with care and reverence, doing all he can to preserve timbers where they sit or find a new use for them. Restoration and conservation is the focus of his company — he just does not work on any new construction projects.
